The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has refuted rumours hovering on social media that travellers are being robbed of their treasures by criminals at Stella Maris in Blantyre.

Social media is awash with reports that during the night there are people at Stella Maris, dressed in police uniforms, armed with fire arms and robbing people of money and other belongings.

The report further said that one of the travellers was this week robbed money amounting to Mk K250,000.

But the police have trashed the reports, describing it as fake.
“Police in Blantyre informs residents and Malawians in general to disregard a fake alert warning circulating on social media that travellers are being robbed of their treasures at Stella Maris in Blantyre during dusk.

“The post, which has no basis, is only meant to instill fear in the city residents. Inquiries have been made and no such report has been recorded at any police formation of present,” reads in part the police statement.

Added the statement: “However police visibility has been enhanced in all the cities, towns and districts during this festive season to reduce the fear of crime, dealing with any criminal elements, and conducting road traffic checks.

“Malawians are, therefore, appealed to work with their police in ensuring safer communities during this festive season and beyond.”
