The Malawi Prisons Service (MPS) has revealed that over 40 percent of inmates in the country have received Covid-19 vaccine.
Prisons spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba said that over 6, 000 out of 14, 000 inmates in the country’s correction facility have been vaccinated against the virus.
According to Shaba, their target is to vaccinate at least 10, 000 inmates in order to curb further spread of the virus in the country’s prisons.
He added that in the last two months, the positivity rate in the country’s correctional facilities has been rising hence the decision.
Health Rights Activist Maziko Matemba has since hailed the prison authorities for achieving over 40 percent vaccination rate which is way above the country’s 13 percent.
