Police in Chikwawa are keeping in custody a 41-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her biological mother, Saliet Bendalamu, 53.
Chikwawa Police Station Spokesperson, Sergeant Dickson Matemba has identified the suspect as Mary Saliet of Kapsimbo Village in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in the district.
He said that reports show that the mother was sick since September 2021 and she was accusing her daughter of not paying her a visit.
“On December 30, 2021, the sick mother went to her daughter to know reasons behind the daughter’s failure to visit her since she fell sick in September.
“The daughter was, however, not pleased with her mother’s inquiry; hence, disagreements erupted between the two and she is suspected to have assaulted her mother, leaving her unconscious,” Matemba said.
He said well-wishers rushed the mother to Ngabu Rural Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Spokesperson added that after receiving the report, Ngabu Police detectives rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect.
Postmortem has revealed that death was due to hemorrhagic shock secondary to assault, according to Matemba.
He said the suspect would appear in court soon to answer murder charge contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code.
The late Bendalamu came from Utumbe Village in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in the district.
