Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Mwanza West Joyce Chitsulo has lambasted former President Peter Mutharika for gagging them from using Bingu wa mutharika’s portrait in campaign posters.
Earlier this week, Mutharika warned DPP estranged Vice President Kondwani Nankhumwa from using Bingu’s portrait in campaign posters.
He argued that the act meant that if Bingu wa Mutharika was alive could have endorsed his candidature.
Barely a day after the warning, two lawmakers namely Mwanza West legislator Joyce Chitsulo and Blantyre City South East Member of Parliament (MP) Sameer Suleman produced similar posters.
Speaking in an interview with the press Chitsulo said it was laughable that Mutharika was taking Bingu as a family property when he is the founder of DPP. She said all DPP regalia bears his face.
She said Mutharika’s statements show that the recent reconciliation effort between him and Nankhumwa camp was cosmetic.
“In DPP, we are playing too much! I wonder why people seem so afraid of Nankhumwa.
“This habit of writing press statements anyhow is watering down seriousness in the party. People are now laughing at us because of some of these things,” said Chitsulo.
She added: “They are saying we should not use Bingu’s face, yet people love the DPP because of Bingu, not some of the other leaders. There is nothing wrong in using Bingu’s image. He is the founder and we love him.”
Mutharika is yet to comment on the matter.
