The High Court in Blantyre is tomorrow expected to deliver its sentence in a case in which a police officer, Andrew Chagaga, was convicted last year for raping twice a Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) student in 2020.
The law enforcer committed the crime while the student was in custody at Limbe Police Station.
Since his conviction Chagaga has been remanded at Blantyre Prison awaiting his sentence.
The matter was committed to the High Court from the Magistrate Court after the State prayed for a stiffer punishment.
The victim was arrested in 2020 for the offence of idle and disorderly under section 180 of the Penal Code.
The State is being represented by Trevor Mphalale from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution, Ruth Kaima of Centre for Human Rights Education, Advice and Advocacy and Chikondi Chijozi of Southern Africsn Litigation Centre.
