A high court judge in Malawi has unconditionally released a murder suspect who has stayed on remand for 14 years waiting for judgment.
The man, Allan Tebulo was arrested on 30 August 2007 over murder charges and first appeared in court in 2013, sic years later after his arrest
According to reports, the case had stalled because the judge who was handling the case died.
Tebulo’s freedom came after Paralegal Advisory Service Institute (PASI) organized a Camp Court at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre.
Center for Human Rights Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) Executive Director Victor Mhango applauded the judgement.
According to Mhango, criminal justice is what is keeping some suspects on remand for a long time, Mhango says the development is worrisome.
He continued that there is a need to improve communication among criminal justice systems to detect suspects who have overstayed on prison remand.
