One person has died in a road accident after the driver lost control of his motor vehicle and veered off the road when she was trying to avoid a pothole in Chiradzulu.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 24, 2022 at Njuli quarry along John Chilembwe Highway.

The deceased has been identified as Chikumbutso Chikapa,18, of Chikuse Village from Traditional Authority Mpama  in Chiradzulu.

The other two are Steven Zakeyu,18, of John  Kameta village in Traditional Authority Mpama and a pedal cyclist Watson Gerald, 49, of Njeremba village in Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu.

Police have reported that both sustained minor injuries.

The motor vehicle , Nissan Tilda saloon driven by Bertha Banda, 27, was coming from the direction of Zomba heading towards Limbe.

At Njuli Quarry junction she lost control of the vehicle as she was  avoiding the pothole and went to the extreme nearside (left) where she hit two pedestrians and a pedal cyclist.

Due to the impact, Chikapa sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures on a right leg and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chiradzulu District Hospital.

The driver escaped unhurt while the other two sustained minor injuries.

The motor vehicle went to the near side field where it overturned and got extensively damaged. The bicycle also got extensively damaged.

The dead body is being kept at Chiradzulu District Hospital mortuary waiting for relatives to have it buried.
