Following heavy floods that have hit hard the southern region districts, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), has deployed a Malawi Defence Force (MDF) helicopter for surveillance and minimal rescue operations.

The helicopter will move around Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje and Phalombe districts.

Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, has also confirmed deploying 10 military rescue boats.

“they are moving from Monkeybay, two will be deployed in Zomba, two Phalombe, two in Mulanje and four to service the lower shire, particularly Makhanga and Nyachikadza areas,” he said.

Kalemba said the areas have experienced heavy flooding as a result of cyclone ANA,.

Currently, the exact figure of people that have been hit by floods is not known.
