President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is this afternoon expected to attend the International Atomic Energy Agency Rays of Hope meeting organized by the African Union (AU).

The Radiation Medicine Initiative for Cancer Treatment launch is to be hosted by the Outgoing Chairperson of AU, Felix Tshisekedi, who is also DR Congo president together with the Incoming Chairperson of AU, President Macky Sall of Senegal.

This comes at the time when African countries are struggling to find lasting treatment for cancer patients in their native countries than referring such patients abroad.

Later the Malawi leader is expected to meet representatives of Malawians living in Ethiopia where he is likely going to encourage them to find investors to come and invest in Malawi.

While in Ethiopia, President Dr Chakwera is expected to sign the African Union protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disability in Africa.

The protocol intends to protect over 84 million Africans with various forms of disability who are likely to experience poverty, discrimination and violence.

By signing the protocol, the Malawi leader will demonstrate Malawi’s commitment to meeting international standards on the protection of persons with disability in the country.

The 35th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly is being held under the theme: “Building Resilience in Nutrition on the African Continent: Accelerate the Human Capital, Social and Economic Development”
