Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament Ulemu Chilapondwa is receiving public backlash over his remarks on continued rise of cooking oil prices deemed as careless and insensitive.
In a viral video, Chilapondwa was responding to what leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa said in response to President Chakwera’s State of National Address (SONA) on Thursday last week.
In his remarks Nankhumwa said government should consider removing tax on cooking oil as a way of making it affordable to every Malawian even those in the village.
Chilapondwa said what Nankhumwa is calling if baseless adding that cooking oil is for the elites and not a common Malawian.
According to Chilapondwa, there are real issues that the people in village are looking for and not cooking oil.
“It surprises me to hear that the whole leader of opposition instead of talking facts or maybe giving out solutions to the present situation, he goes on talk about cooking oil prices. Cooking oil prices are for the elite, local people in the villages are not looking for solutions to cooking oil, they are looking solutions to real issues,” said Chilapondwa.
The development has attracted different views from the populace of which majority have cautioned the honorable MP.
One Omega Bema Ziphondo said; “This MP should no longer represent people of Ntchisi …. what he was talking was his own ideas just to please Chakwera, may be begging for ministerial post, he has goofed.”
Pat Abig Siliya commented; “And his constituents are proud that they have intelligent MP??? I don’t think this man deserve to represent people in a parliament as MP. Just to respect him I’m saying “he is less wise.”
