Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola has advised Malawians to take loadshedding schedules seriously to avoid being inconvenienced.
Matola said this in Lilongwe today Friday, February 11th 2022 at Central Office Information as he was briefing the media to update the nation on the status of electricity generation together with Minister of Information and Digitalisation Gospel Kazako through the Government faces the Press Platform.
Matola advised Malawians to take loadshedding schedules which are running for 6 hours per designated area seriously to avoid being inconvenienced.
The Minister said the country has lost 50 percent of power and to have enough back up power, ESCOM needs K18 billion as he revealed that government will commission more generators in April.
“To restore power supply in the Lower Shire alone, it requires over K5 billion and the power restoration efforts is estimated to take 6 months,” Matola said.
He further, thanked communities surrounding Kapichira for working hand-in-hand with ESCOM and EGENCO to restore power despite the threat of crocodile attacks.
In his remarks, Minister of Information and Digitalisation Gospel Kazako urged people to plant trees and preserve the environment before negative impacts of environmental degradation hit humanity.
The country has lost 130 megawatts which is 50 percent of hydro power due to the effects of Tropical Cyclone ANA.
Roughly estimations are projecting the amount of reconstruction at 18 billion Malawi Kwacha as potential constructors are being awaited to offer their bids.
The Ministry of Energy has therefore assured Malawians that they are working around the clock to ensure that the power gap is filled.
