Seven people sustained injuries after a trailer ferrying liquefied petroleum gas exploded at the Mutarakwa area on the busy Mai-Mahiu- Nairobi road on Sunday.

Seven vehicles were reduced to ashes during the explosion that caused a huge snarl-up on the busy highway.

It all started at 6 a.m. when the tanker transporting LPG gas lost control, veered off the road and landed on its side.

The driver is said to have taken cover, fearing that the tanker would explode.

Minutes later, he informed his employer about the incident, and a few minutes to 11 am a crew from the multi energies company arrived at the scene, accompanied by a crane, a probox vehicle as well as a police car; the mission was to begin the rescue efforts.

Those who witnessed say that all hell broke loose when rescuers began lifting the tanker in a bid to move it away from the scene.

As attempts were being made, the gas started leaking, and without warning, an explosion rent the air, sending plumes of smoke and flames and scorching everything in its path.
