Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre (MHRRC) in collaboration with Mangochi District Council over the weekend held community awareness meeting on rights of persons with albinism at Senior Chief Nankumba in Mangochi.
Speaking during the awareness meeting, MHRRC Programs Officer, Enock Chinkhuntha said that most people do not understand that persons with albinism have rights just like any other.
“We want communities to understand that persons with albinism have fundamental rights and capacity to get education, do business and participate in various developmental activities,” Chinkhuntha said, adding that the MHRRC project intends to remove the negative attitudes that people have on persons with albinism.
Also speaking during the function Mangochi District Council chairperson, Mathews Scorch, who was also the guest of honor said the council is committed in ensuring that persons with albinism are being included in every developmental activity the district is undertaking.
Secretary for Association of Persons with Albinism (APAM) for Mangochi, Alexa Zacharia expressed gratitude to MHRRC for organizing the community awareness to promote rights of persons with albinism saying persons with albinism face many challenges because some people fail to understand their fundamental rights and urged them to report acts of abuses against them to police.
