Malawi Congress Party (MCP), a key partner in the Tonse Alliance has revealed that its leader Lazarus Chakwera, who is also the country’s president will represent the party during 2025’s general elections.

The revelation has been made by the party’s second vice president Harry Mkandawire during a meeting he held with some of the party’s officials in Mzuzu at MCP’s northern region headquarters on Sunday.

According to MCP constitution, this was the last term for Chakwera to be the party’s president which only requires him to stand for two terms.

However, MCP’s regional chairperson Joseph Chavula, said the party has already agreed to let Chakwera be the torchbearer for MCP because party already made its resolution during the 2018 elective convention.

According to Chavula, Chakwera will use the country’s constitution on the matter.

“The agreement was that Chakwera would use the country’s constitution which gives him liberty to contest again as opposed to the party’s constitution which bars him as this is his second and last term. The National Executive Committee Meeting held two weeks ago also agreed on the same,” says Chavula.

This is contrary to what the country’s  vice president Saulos Chilima once said during campaign period that the presidency will rotate.

According to Chavula, nothing will change even if the secret agreement between Chakwera and Chilima would leak because in the said document presidency rotation was never mentioned.

Chilima’s side, the United Transformation Movement (UTM) has not commented on the matter.
