Five women plying their business as Sex workers at Liwonde in Machinga district have been jailed for three months for the offense of idle and disorderly contrary to section 180 (a) of the penal code.
This follows a sweeping exercise by the Police due to an upsurge in breaking and theft cases in the township.
During the operation, police came across sex workers who were loitering within the township without proper reason and were arrested.
They all pleaded guilty to the charge leveled against them.
In mitigation, they all said that they were first offenders and breadwinners to their families.
In his ruling, First-grade Magistrate Chrispin Sachuluka concurred with the state that those culprits may sometimes be used to steal within the township.
