Police have fired teargas canisters at demonstrators who thronged Lilongwe District Council premises to express their frustrations with the council’s decision to withdraw consent for demonstrations.

Lilongwe District Commissioner Lawford Palani had initially granted Citizens against Impunity and Corruption permission to conduct protests in a bid to force Ashok Nair to withdraw a defamation case against ACB Director-General Martha Chizuma.

The withdrawal of the permission compelled the organisers of the protests to now target Palani.

After approaching Lilongwe District Council offices, some of the demonstrators started to pelt stones at the council’s offices, forcing the police to take action.

Meanwhile, the demonstrators have been dispersed to various nearby spots.
