Shadow Minister of Information and Digitalization Mark Botomani has said he is saddened over the ongoing infighting in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), saying the infighting is destroying the party.

Botomani’s remarks followed the commotion that erupted in Parliament on Thursday following the decision by Member of Parliament (MP) for Mangochi West Shadreck Namalomba, of changing his seat without seeking concert from the leader of opposition in the house, Kondwani Nankhumwa.

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara ordered Namalomba to go back to seat number 100 and leave seat number 25, but he refused.

Namalomba accused Nankhumwa of torturing him in the house.

Speaking in an interview with the press Botamani urged top officials in the party including President Peter Mutharika who is leading the party to find solutions on the ongoing infighting.

Botoman further accused Namalomba for his decision of moving from seat number 100 to seat number 25, saying it is only the leader of opposition in the house who has powers to allocate a seat to any Member of Parliament in the opposition benches.

Infighting in DPP started before the court-sanctioned Fresh Presidential Election held on June 23 2022, but deep divisions came to light in August 2020 when the party’s secretary general Grezelder Jeffrey told press that Mutharika had done his part and that there was need for new leadership.
