Former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Deputy National Director of Women, Hyasinta Chikaonda, has defected to Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
Chikaonda, who once served as Member of Parliament for Dedza East, from 2009 to 2014, said she decided to ditch her party because she wants to support the current leadership in bringing tangible developments in the country.
“I have made the decision on my own for the love I have for MCP. This is my original party and I will commit myself to the party’s leadership,” she said.
Regional Chairman for the MCP, Patrick Chilondola, officially welcomed Chikaonda at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.
“We are very happy with Chikaonda’s return,” he said.
In the 2019 Parliamentary Election, Chikaonda competed in Dedza East on a DPP ticket and together with four others, lost to independent candidate, Patrick Bandawe, who is now a full member of MCP.
