Police in Zomba have arrested a 18-year-old boy identified as Yohane Chikondano on suspicious that he was stealing maize from his uncle’s field.

His uncle, identified as Mosses Mussa (Not real name) aged 49, took the case to police after noticing that someone has been harvesting his maize field.

Matters on the case show that Mussa invited his nephew Chikondano to his house at Chinamwali township in Zomba on Saturday 16 April to get their money since they worked for him without receiving anything.

“My uncle invited us to go to his house in Chinamwali to get our pay since we have not received anything after weeding in his farm, but  to my surprise when we reached the house he told my brother to wait for us since he told  me to escort him to the bank”, he said

Chikondano continued that: “Instead of going to the bank, we went to the police where my uncle told the officer who was on duty that i stole maize in his garden but the truth is that i only cut down the boundary trees that is all”.

Mosses Mussa, not exact name, uncle to the accused said he has done this because he found out that his nephew is the one who has been stealing the crops since he took so long to pay.

“Someone has been harvesting my maize and i am not doubting that is my nephew, just because i have taken so long to give them their money after working for me, Yohane, my nephew thought of stealing the crops” he said

The reporter of the story found out that the Uncle, Mussa, is his behaviour of inviting his relative’s children to work in his farm in Naizi without giving them their agreed amount and that the nephew did not steal the crops in the field but cut down the boundary trees in the garden.

When the parents of the boy held what had happened did not give the uncle any chance but wanted to know where the child was and the uncle had no chance but to escort them to the police station in Zomba town.

The police officers on duty denied to comment on the matter saying the issue is under investigation.
