The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has cancelled the planned press briefing which was scheduled for tomorrow with an aim of clarifying matters surrounding the interrogation of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma.
Deputy National Police Spokesperson Harry Namwaza confirmed of the cancellation of the press briefing to the media.
According to Namwaza, the cancellation of the briefing is in line with a court order issued by the Lilongwe High Court after Chizuma’s lawyer Martha Kaukonde applied for a stay order halting the police from continuing with their investigations implicating Chizuma over the leaked audio clip.
Last week, with order from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni, the police summoned Chizuma to be interviewed on the leaked audio before the police suspended the sumon after some Malawians threatened to hold vigils at the police in solidarity with Chizuma.
The police then announced that they will hold a press briefing to explain matters surrounding Chizuma’s planned interrogation.
Namwaza has however told the media that the police’s fate to either carry on with the investigations or not will be based after the ruling by Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court which gave a go ahead of the said investigations, is reviewed
