One of the country’s good governance commentators Makhumbo Munthali has hailed President Lazarus Chakwera for handling last night’s presser with intelligent but accused him of being out of context.
Chakwera was updating Malawians on his four day trip to Mozambique which he said Malawi is yet to benefit largely.
After everything members of the press were given a chance to ask Chakwera questions regarding matters that have been highly discussed for the past days among others his stand on the ongoing Zuneth Sattar corruption scandal and the fight between the office of the Attorney General, Director of Public Prosecution and Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Adding to that Chakwera was asked to rate himself for the past two years he has been in power in reaction to two pastoral letters that have been issued faulting his leadership.
However, Chakwera failed to give convincing answers related to the questions asked among others on Sattar he said he cannot say anything arguing that the matter is still in court.
On the in fight of the three top offices, Chakwera said if nothing changes he will be compelled to remove the people.
Despite having handled the presser with grace, Munthali said context was not on Chakwera’s side.
“He largely handled the presser with grace. Intelligently responded to some sensitive questions. But context was and is not on his side. Context expected and expects action and decisiveness. Context is tired of rhetoric. Context is tired of executive shielding of thieves,” said Munthali.
He continued that gone are the days when “the social media could go crazy with posts heaping praise on the President following a good show in a presser.”
“Chakwera handled most of the questions well but context,” Munthali stressed.
