PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says as Zambians celebrate the Kenneth Kaunda day today, there is need to do so with a sense of gratitude and helping those in need.

The President said this in a message that was broadcast on ZNBC TV and radio on the eve of the inaugural Kenneth Kaunda day.

President Hichilema said: “we have a lot to learn from Dr Kenneth Kaunda who dedicated his life to the service of others.”

He said Dr Kaunda left an iconic and lasting legacy of love, peace and patriotism.

President Hichilema underscored the need to emulate and champion the causes which Dr Kaunda stood for.

Dr Kaunda died, aged 97, on June 17, 2021 at Maina Soko Military Hospital in Lusaka.

After 21 days of national mourning, Dr Kaunda was interred at Embassy Park in Lusaka on July 7, 2021.

Dr Kaunda, Zambia’s first President from 1964 to 1991, was born at Lubwa in Chinsali on April, 28, 1924.

Sixth Republican president Edgar Lungu gazetted Dr Kaunda’s birthday as a public holiday, in honour of the legacy of the fallen Statesman.
