The construction of 38 million kwacha Chimombo Health Post in Traditional Authority Chimombo, Nsanje District is expected to reduce maternal and child death as most women will be able to deliver under trained experts at the Post.

According to Maria Paul, villager in Jambasa said the health post will help expectant mothers in the area to give birth at the facility as it will reduce long distances they walk to access maternal assistance.

“We usually go to Ndamera or Mbenje Health Centres which is a distance of between seven and 10 kilometers respectively. During rainy season it becomes difficult to access medical services because floods in rivers that are on the way to the two health centres,” she said.

Another villager in Bedi around the same area, Fainess Yohane said the Health Centre Mbenje where they received medical care usually closes each year during the rainy seasons due to floods which affect the hospital making it difficult for pregnant mothers to access help.

“Mbenje Health Centre usually closes when it is raining because the floods affect the delivery of services at the hospital as a result a lot of women fail to go for antenatal or to under five clinic”, said Yohane

T/A Chimombo said he is very much happy that government through Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD) has helped out his people from the problem of medical services.

“I am very much glad that the Health Post is being constructed in my area and i am hoping that this Post will help to reduce maternal and child death in this area”, said Chimombo.

Chimombo area has a catchment population of over 30,000 and 96 women out of 100 women died in 2017 due to maternal complications.
