People in Zomba have voiced out against Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) proposal to make Zomba Lisanjala and Zomba Chingale constituencies as one constituency.
During a a public hearing on review of constituency and ward boundaries, party, and traditional leaders spoke against the decision saying it is counterproductive to development.
In her remarks, Zomba Chingale parliamentarian, Loney Chijere Phiri said ‘the Electoral Commission should not look at the number of voters in 2025, it should also dwell on reality of the total population, topography and distribution of development projects.’
Senior Chief Mulumbe said it is hard for one parliamentarian to manage one constituency.
“It’s like you are killing one of my children, one parliamentarian cannot manage the two constituencies if amalgamated,” said Senior Chief Mulumbe.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Francis Kasaila has acknowledged the concerns and has promised to look into them as a commission.
