District commissioner (DC) for Rumphi district council Emmanuel Bulukutu has asked people in the district to engage themselves in the National Clean Up practice in order to overcome diseases which come from poor hygiene.

Bulukutu made the remarks on Friday morning during the clean up exercise in Rumphi.

The DC said that the only way to prevent diseases such as Cholera and Diarrhea is to practice good sanitation both at home and streets.

“The cleaning exercise is to ensure that we eradicate the diseases, if we fail to eradicate the diseases atleast we should reduce the chances of contracting them with 97% ,” said Bulukutu

He then appealed to everyone to extend the exercise in the business places, workplaces, place of worship and their homes.

According to Feleni Moyo, ground labourer for Rumphi market said the district council should support the exercise.

“We are very glad in this market today because our DC has come all the way to help us with the cleaning and if the government wants to gain more profits from this, more support is needed to sustain the exercise,” Moyo said.

The exercise was launched in 2020 by the President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera with the aim of promoting sanitation and hygiene in Malawi.
