Democratic Progressive Party Director of Operations Joe Nyirongo has asked the party’s Northern Region Committee leaders to withdraw its decision to endorse Peter Mutharika as the torch bearer come 2025 elections.
On Friday last week, DPP northern region committee led by regional governor Ackim Mwanza endorsed Mutharika as the party’s torchbearer in the 2025 polls.
“We don’t care about his age because the youthful leaders who Malawians trusted in the last elections have failed. People are saying it is better Mutharika should come back. That is why we are saying, as a regional committee, we want Mutharika again,” Mwanza said.
But speaking in an interview with the press Nyirongo said the committee’s decision came without consulting NEC members from the region, who according to him, are part of the region’s decisions.
He then asked the committee to reverse the decision.
However, the party’s Acting Regional Governor for the north Ackim Mwanza has said the committee cannot be shaken with an individual decision on the endorsement.
