The United Democratic Front (UDF) has responded to protests by other party members who are against resignation of Atupele Muluzi as the party’s president and appointment of Lilian Patel as the party’s acting leader.
On Sunday, Atupele announced that he has resigned from active politics and appointed Patel as UDF’s interim president till the next convention.
The party’s spokesperson Yusuf Mwawa said both letters written by UDF Northern region members and another by Southern Region members “cannot be taken seriously because the letters are not signed and there are no names are attached.”
“Our political nemesis want to take advantage of resignation of AAM to sow seeds of discontent and disunity. Rt. Hon Lilian Patel is operating on an interim basis until NEC meets to discuss the contents of the letter authored by Rt. Hon Atupele Muluzi within the next few days,” Mwawa said.
He added that UDF’s Constitution is clear on matters such as this.
