Rehabilitation of Kapichira intake water dam structure which was destroyed due to cyclone ANA is expected to commence on July 1, 2022 in two phases that will take close to a period of 6 months.

This has been disclosed in a statement released by Electricity Generation Company Limited (EGENCO) website on the update of Kapichira power station restoration effort

According to the statement, phase 1 will temporarily reconstruct a cofferdam around the mouth of the damaged fuse plug and redirect water to the intake to resume power generation.

The statement says Phase 2 will be the reconstruction of a dam structure with improved design that will be resilient to the frequent floods the country experienced due to climate change and catchment area degradation.

It further states that the company is undertaking an Environmental and Social Management plan (ESMP) for phase 1 work per regulatory requirements and the consultants are doing their work, the activity which will end mid-June.

The statement added that the preliminary documents were submitted to the Public Procurement and Disposal of Asserts Authority (PPDA) and there was no objection to conduct a restricted tender for the reconstruction works.

The programme will be funded by the US$60 million that the government has borrowed from World Bank for the emergency power restoration project for EGENCO and ESCOM.
