Creative Centre for Community Mobilization (CRECCOM) has sensitized people from Ntata zone at Traditional Authority Tombondiya in Mulanje district on inclusive education and children with disabilities through its Tiwaphunzitse project which they are implementing in partnership with Christian Blind Mission.
In an interview, CRECCOM Program Officer for the project, Michael Tcheula said children with disabilities should go to school.
“It is not good to keep children with disabilities at home instead of sending them to school because they also have the right to education,” Tcheula said.
Tcheula also said it is important to prepare children with disabilities ranging from nursery to primary schools so that they could learn how to read and write.
Agreeing with Tcheula, Group Village Head (GVH) Matimati said children with disabilities should go to school because they also have the same opportunities as those without disabilities.
“If we do not educate children with disabilities, they become poor,” said Matimati.
Fyness Masikini, a mother of two at Limbuli zone, said the project has come at a time when many disabled children are being locked indoors.
“The project will help to encourage parents of children with disabilities to send them to school and become better leaders,” said Masikini.
The Inclusive Education Specialist for Mulanje district, Andrew Chimwaza said that when children with disabilities are locked up in the house, this is an example of torture and ill-treatment.
