Two inmates from Maula Reformatory School have been listed to continue with their studies at Natural Resource College (NRC).

Alex Machilika aged 32 has been listed to pursue Diploma in Agriculture while Norald Mwale aged 30 to pursue Diploma in Agriculture-Education.

Machilika who scored 19 points was released on 1 June 2022 after his 3-year sentence came to an end for offence of intimidation while Mwale who scored 21 points is still serving a 5-year old sentence for theft and is yet to be released next year in 2023.

Elisa Mtengano, Public Relations Officer for Maula Prison confirmed the development by saying imprisonment is not a barrier to success.

“Being imprisoned is something traumatizing but others still find it as a stepping stone in their lives,” she said.

According to Collings Bandawe, the coordinator and teacher behind the achievement expressed his excitement and commented that the school has the potential of reaching greater heights if enough resources are provided.

“Inadequate of teaching and learning materials is a major challenge, we can do better if we may have enough materials,” Bandawe said.

Since the establishment of the Reformatory School many inmates’ students have been scoring good points compared to the public schools in the country.
