Some Members of Parliament in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have protested the appointment of former Minister of Agriculture Dr. George Chaponda as leader of opposition replacing Kondwani Nankhumwa.

The MPs have described the appointment as null and void.

Mark Botomani, Member of Parliament for Zomba Chisi who is also Shadow Minister of Information and Digitalization said that some members were not invited including him, as such those present did not make a caucus.

He said the positions in parliament remain intact and people will see this when parliament meet next month.

On his part, Mulanje West MP, Yusuf Nthenda said he cannot be ruled by Chaponda in Parliament.

“You should expect chaos within the DPP because I cannot be led by Chaponda in Parliament. I cannot. This is my view but I guess others share it too, because they weren’t involved and they can’t support a leader imposed on them by some section,” said Nthenda.

Meanwhile, Chaponda has urged those MPs protesting his appointment to leave the party.
