A joint operation by the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Police has led to the arrest of Headson Kenan Billiati from Machinga on allegations that he is part of a syndicate that was duping young people by promising them jobs in the military.

Mzuzu Police Spokesperson, Sub Inspector Paul Tembo said that Billiati has been arrested at the Mzuzu Shopping Mall and investigations to trace his co-accused persons have also been launched.

It is alleged that the suspect has been collecting money from people in exchange for recruitment in the military and at the time of his arrest, Billiati was found with MK350, 462.78 in his Airtel money mobile wallet.

There have been announcements on social media calling for young people to undergo military training in some Malawi Defence Force formations in the country, reports which the army has been refuting.
