Police in Ntcheu have arrested at least eight people following ‘Dzuka Ntcheu’ patronized demonstrations that turned violent after presenting their petition to the District Commissioner’s office.
National Police Deputy Spokesperson Harry Namwaza has confirmed the development but says the suspects are yet to be formally charged as police are still on the ground.
Namwaza says they will make sure that all the perpetrators of the violence have been brought into book.
On Wednesday, a grouping under the banner “Dzuka Ntcheu” organized peaceful demonstrations over high cost of living in the country.
Later, the demonstrations turned violent as some protesters blocked the M1 road with stones and burnt tyres; prompting police to fire teargas to disperse them.
