Early Life:

Young M.A was born on the 3rd of April 1992 in Brooklyn, New York, the United States. Her real name is Katorah Marreroshe later adopted her stage name Young M.A. Her father is Puerto Rican while her mother Latasha Carlisle Blackmanis Jamaican.

When she was just a year old her father was sent to prison and wasn’t released until she was 11. Due to her incarceration, she was raised by her single mother and her uncles and grew up with her older brother Kenneth Marrero.

All of her family members were passionate about music even performing freestyle in their neighborhood. Young M.A also has a younger sister who’s 13 years younger than her and a grandmother who she has a close relationship with her.

Her grandmother G MA is the only person allowed to call Young MA (Nunu) a nickname her grandmother gave to her when she was born.

On the 6th of September 2009 when Young M.A was just 17 years old her 20 years old brother Kenneth was killed in Pennsylvania by a member of his own gang.

Following this tragic incident and while completing her senior year of high school, Young M.A went through many months of depression. She also went to three therapy sessions at her school but discontinued them as she didn’t want to open up and talk about it.

That was the same time when Young M.A got into bad arguments with her mother so she eventually left her parent’s house to state her ex-girlfriend’s house.

From there she started taking drugs including vodka and also admits to getting arrested this time. After high school, she continued her pursuit of music even meeting a few record producers and going to the studio.

Young M.A put together two mixtapes including Young M.A Mixtape and Sleep Walkin released with her own money.

To pay her bills she had to pick up some regular gigs including working at the department store T.J. Maxx for some time before working at a New York City restaurant chain called Shake Shack. 

Another musical influence in Young M.A’s life is 50 Cent. She recalls hearing his song Many Men for the first time while she was driving and that really inspired her to pursue it full time.
