Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for Eastern Region Bright Msaka SC on Sunday visited former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioner Linda Kunje at Mikuyu Prison in Zomba district.
Kunje and her driver were convicted on Friday on the offense of criminal negligence which is contrary to Section 246 of the Penal Code.
The two were being accused of obstructing President Lazarus Chakwera’s convoy when he was travelling from Blantyre to Zomba in December 2020.
Writing on his official facebook page after the visit Msaka described Kunje’s case as uncommon in Malawi.
“I found Ms. Kunje in a positive mood and she thanked the prison staff and senior officials for being professional in their work and according me an opportunity to cheer her.
“Ms.Kunje is due to appear in court for sentencing on Tuesday,” wrote Msaka.
He added: “This type of case is very uncommon in Malawi. I can only remember the recent case in neighbouring Zambia where the current President of Zambia, President Hichilema, was similarly prosecuted for obstructing former President Lungu’s convoy.”
Kunje was one of the commissioners who handled the 2019 quashed Presidential polls which saw former President Peter Mutharika being declared victorious.
