TWO weeks after murdering her son in a lodge in Lusaka’s Kamwala South, killer mother Maeka Musowe attempted to end her own life while in police detention yesterday.
Since her arrest on August 13, Maeka has been a solo tenant in the female detention cell of Kabwata Police Station.
According to Police sources, Maeka was moved to the demolition-marked Richard Kachingwe Police Station after showing suicidal signs yesterday.
Upon arrival in the cell, Maeka decided she was better dead than alive and there was no better thing to end her life than the mosquito coil provided to detainees to save them from ferocious drug-sucking mosquitoes of Kabwata.
Maeka crushed the mosquito coil and mixed it with water which she drunk shocking other inmates who then alerted officers.
Maeka was immediately extracted from the cell and rushed to the University Teaching Hospital where she was treated for mild poisoning and discharged.
The suicidal murder suspect has since been taken back to Kabwata Police Station where a female officer will provide twenty-four seven watchful company to her from inside the filthy and foul-stenched cell.
Two weeks ago, shocking news poured out that Maeka had placed a pillow to the face of her two year seven months old child Sangwani Chabinga, sat on it until he stopped breathing.
She committed the atrocious act at a lodge in Kamwala South where she lodged after receiving money from her elder sister who had given her matching orders to return to her mother in Kitwe due to her irresponsible behavior and love for late night partying.
Sure that the boy was dead, Maike returned to her sister’s place and lay the child on the couch as if he was just sleeping.
Upon noticing that the child was unresponsive after being checked on, Maeke’s elder sister rushed him to the University Teaching Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
After interrogation, Maeke confessed ending the life of her child upon which she was arrested
