We should be reminded of the value of being a brother’s keeper by Joyce Vincent’s narrative. Individualism has taken the place of the unity that used to exist because of changes in the 21st century.

It is so heartbreaking that you can live next door to a neighbour for more than a year without ever recognising or welcoming them. We currently live in a civilization of that type.

I was shocked as I read Joyce Vincent’s account. How could Joyce, a stunning young woman, die in an apartment only to be found three years later? The story is absolutely unbelievable, and there is obviously something wrong. She didn’t even have relatives, let alone parents. She didn’t have neighbours or even friends to watch out for her, did she? What actually took place?

It is very clear that our culture has completely lost its sense of community. We take pride in our introversion and private lifestyles, despite the fact that these traits are destroying us from the inside out. Modernization and urbanisation are to blame for Joyce’s death, which occurred in secret in her UK apartment.

Joyce is said to have passed away in her home apartment while watching TV in December 2003. When her body was discovered, the television was still turned on and tuned to BBC, and she was still seated in her armchair, appearing to be watching the news, when officials discovered her.

Even the apartment’s owner was unaware that one of the residents had been deceased for three years. It was clear the alleged tenant was still alive because the property rent was being automatically taken from her bank account. Even the neighbours who share the same apartment were in the dark.

The smell emanating from the house was really strong, yet none of the neighbours were even worried because they all believed it was coming from the adjacent landfill.

After three years, Joyce’s account could no longer be debited for money. When it became apparent that the aforementioned renter was no longer there and had been dead for three years, the landlord secured a court order to evict her forcibly. The landlord had been giving out notices to move out for a while, but none of them had been answered.

They were completely surprised to see a 38-year-old woman’s skeleton inside the door when it was forcibly opened, still holding its sitting position. They knew the date of her passing because of the mountains of unopened Christmas presents. The TV that had been placed in a room corner remained on the entire time she was dead. It was really a startling thing to see. The food in the refrigerator was all so out of date that it was impossible to identify any of it.

Whether the woman had acquaintances or perhaps relatives was a subject that many people pondered. Later, it became apparent that she had no parents and was no longer connected to her family. They had not been close to her father, who passed away a few years after Joyce’s death, and her mother had died when she was a very small child.

Nobody ever rang her doorbell or even made an attempt to find her. Sources claim that Joyce was a bright young woman with ambition who had accomplished a lot at an early age and was making a nice living. People who knew her were shocked and surprised that she didn’t have a boyfriend or close friend.

She had four sisters who were still living, according to reports, but they were not in contact and were not even on good terms. The sisters were shocked to learn of their sister’s passing, as were a lot of other people. In reality, they had been making an effort to find her but had failed.

The life of Joyce Vincent demonstrates the value of maintaining close relationships with those who matter to us. It instils in us the value of forming friendships. If you find one, keep them; there is a friend who sticks tighter than a brother. Be a brother’s keeper and learn to check on your pals as well.
