The ministry of agriculture has, with immediate effect, banned the slaughter, movement and consumption of livestock in Neno district after a total of 172 cattle were detected to have Foot and Mouth disease.
A statement signed by the secretary in the ministry, Sandram Maweru, the 172 animals are from 23 kraals detected at Ligowe dip tank posing an immediate threat to 3500 cattle and livestock in the area.
Maweru says the restriction which extends to sheep, pigs, goats and cattle has been imposed to counter any further spread of the contagious disease which has a huge economic loss if not immediately controlled.
