Malawians on social media are question the medical bill of the wife of the country’s vice president Saulos Chilima, Mary.

Social media platforms were today awash with a confidential memo from the office of the vice president seeking approval from the office of the president to release the funds for Mrs. Chilima’s medical trip.

The office of the president has approved.

According to the memo, Mrs. Chilima is in need of medical attention in South Africa of which the costs of the bill is pegged at K311.98m (three hundred and eleven million, nine hundred and eighty thousand Kwacha) which was reviewed by the Secretary to the President and Cabinet and the Secretary to Treasury.

The budget for the trip comprises accommodation, air travel fares, external travel allowances, vehicle hiring expenses, local security costs and food rations for Mary Chilima and four support staff. Mrs. Chilima is entitled to public-funded medical help.

Below are some of the reactions from Malawians.

Thangateni Baton Adam; “And you will people saying Malawi is a poor country. With that 300 million kwacha would improve our health sector but our leaders don’t love this country.”

Michael Limban; “Then you will hear someone saying Malawi is poor. I am saying this without any fear that our leaders deliberately don’t want to fix our health sector, education sector as they know they will never ever step in with their families to seek services. What a shame.”

Benjiz Mw Mbachi; “Yet someone is going to die today Chifukwa chosowa panado weniweniyu. Not chaka cha mawatu today.”

Owen Nathanz Daniel; “That’s too much mmmmm, that’s huge sums of money,it could have improved allitle somewhere, imagine muzipatala amatha kumakanika kulipira bill ya madzi less than 10mita,nde ndalama zosezo just one person.”
