The former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has finally settled its feud of leader of opposition as the party has agreed to hold fresh elections for the position.
According to a statement seen by this publication, the party decided to conclude the case of the leader of opposition through meditation by the court.
The party’s director of legal Charles Mhango has confirmed, adding that the name of George Chaponda which was presented by the party’s president peter Mutharika has been withdrawn as they wait for the fresh elections on the same.
“DPP offered to withdraw the name of Dr Chaponda as Leader of Opposition until we hold fresh elections for the Leader of Opposition. We asked the Court to direct as to the period within which to hold the fresh election, but the Claimants refused to involve the Court in internal party affairs. So we left it to the party to decide when to hold fresh elections for the Leader of Opposition” read part of the statement.
Meanwhile, Kondwani Nankhumwa will still hold on the position of the leader of the opposition until fresh elections are conducted.
However, the party is yet to set a date and venue for the elections for all the DPP members of parliament.
