Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has apologised for his son’s controversial tweets about Kenya, where he said it would take him and his army just two weeks to take over Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba also tweeted about the unification of Uganda and Kenya, saying “colonial borders” should be removed.
Gen Muhoozi was removed from his role as commander of the country’s land forces but was promoted to the rank of a full general – the highest rank in the army. He also remains a presidential advisor on special operations.
In a statement on his website, Mr Museveni asked people to forgive his son’s comments: “It is not correct for Public officers, be they civilian or military, to comment or interfere in any way, in the internal affairs of brother countries.”
He also explained his reasoning behind promoting his son: “There are, however, many other positive contributions the General has made and can still make. This is a time-tested formula – discourage the negative and encourage the positive.”
“I know for a fact that General Muhoozi is a passionate Pan-Africanist. However, the correct method for Pan-Africanists is confidential interactions,” the statement continued.
On Tuesday the general acknowledged that his comments had not gone down well in Kenya.
