Malawian Police officer sentenced to 6 months IHL for causing death due to reckless driving

A court in Mzuzu has fined a 44 year old police officer, inspector Lackson Luwanika for causing death due to reckless driving.

According to police report, Luwanika hit a pedestrian, James Kavuli, 34 and went on to hit a stationary Honda Fit when he was reversing his car.

The Court then found Luwanika guilty of reckless driving, negligence and driving without a license and ordered him to pay a K400,000 fine that should go to the bereaved family as compensation.

Failure to pay the fine, the officer will have to serve 6 months in jail.
