First Lady held a meeting at Golden Peacock hotel in Lilongwe together with the Traditional and Religious Leaders from M’mbelwa District Council on putting to an end of violence against women and girls.

Madame Monica Chakwera said gender equality is needed in the country, women and girls have the same rights as men and boys and no one should be violated.

“If men and boys are violating women and girls, will be seen as bad people in this country. Therefore the bad act must come to an end.”

According to Madame Monica, the challenges affecting Malawi require shared leadership and therefore traditional and religious leaders are primary influencers of the population in terms of setting the most civilized social norms.

Executive Director of Action Aid, Pamela Kuwali said they will support the government in development to advance gender equality and the women empowerment agenda in Malawi.

UN Women representative, Letty praised the government for trying its best to put to an end violence against women and girls.

Letty said, “The government has done a great job by organizing this meeting and educate people about gender quality and women empowerment. This might help men and boys to change and eliminate violence against women and girls in our societies”
