Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody Blantyre West Constituency Member of Parliament for United Transformation Movement (UTM) Arthur Chipungu for allegedly hitting a traffic police officer.
Last week, the Malawi Police release a notice that they are hunting for the legislature after hitting and injuring a police inspector from Lingadzi Police Station.
National Police publicist Peter Kalaya has confirmed the arrest of Chipungu, adding that he was summoned to Lingadzi police for questioning.
According to the police spokesperson, the incident took place on the road between Bingu National Stadium and the interchange.
“When the officer stopped the driver, he showed a sign that he was in a rush but still stopped. For whatever reason, as the officer was getting closer, he decided to drive the car and ended up hitting the officer. This to us was quite intentional.
“After the incident the MP stopped and picked up the injured officer but instead of taking him to the hospital, he left him in the car at Parliament for some time before our car went to pick him up for treatment” further explained Kalaya.
The officer, identified as inspector Mataka from Lingadzi Police, was treated as an outpatient but is still nursing some injuries according to the police.
