Well-known hip-hop star Nepman has turn down a request from some Tonse Alliance officials asking the artist to take down the video of the anti-government song called Ng’ona za M’mabango.

Through the video, the artist addresses Malawi’s current poor economic situation.

“Zafikadi povuta, kulephera kulipira rent/fees ikuvutanso, certificate kuolera mnyumba/kusamba opanda sopo, (The situation is worse as we are struggling to settle rentals and school fees, academic papers have been rendered useless, we are bathing without soap)”, the artist sings.

The video has attracted mixed reactions with many Malawians praising the creativity of the artist.

On the other hand, the song has angered some top officials in the Tonse Alliance government of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

The top officials have since asked the artist to take down the video from the YouTube or face unspecified action.

But the artist has refused to do so in a short statement posted on his official facebook page seen by this publication.

“I am an artist not a politician or a puppet I am not gonna take the video down sir. Malawi is a free country. The song is based on reality, let that sink in,” wrote Nepman.

Meanwhile, Malawi Congress party (MCP) top officials led by its spokesperson Maurice Munthali are yet to comment on the matter.
