Another vendor, Blessing Nyirenda who sells fish at Mzuzu Market said the market does not have enough dust bins.

“We pay market fees every day but we do not have adequate waste management equipment, drainage system is blocked because of the wastes and water flood the market during rainy season which is unhealthy to us.” He said

Chairperson for Mzuzu Main Market, Alexander Sikwese has asked the MCC to look at the drainage system issue.

Spokesperson for MCC, Macdonald Gondwe accepted the challenges attribute them to lack of refuse collection equipment.

He said, “We were using a refuse truck from Nkhatabay for two months District Council but they requested it back two weeks ago, that’s why there more waste in the market.”
