Aspiring Member of Parliament for South Lunzu Constituency Alex Chimwala has trashed rumours hovering on social media claiming that he has dumped the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), a party in Tonse Alliance which is headed by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
Earlier this week, the social media was awash with reports that Chimwala has dumped MCP and contemplating on re-joining the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
The reports claimed that Chimwala is frustrated with Chakwera’s leadership style where the Southern region is neglected.
Speaking in an interview with faceofmalawi Chimwala described the rumour as false, saying he is still an MCP member.
“I have been silent in the past months and that does not mean am out of frontline politics. I am still member of the Malawi Congress Party,” said Chimwala.
When asked as to how the party is fairing in the South in the awake of numerous challenges rocking the country Chimwala said the party need to engage an extra effort in wooing the masses ahead of the 2025 polls.
He then advised the party leadership to flood the south with various development projects and other activities as is the case with central region.
“The people of South Lunzu are asking President Chakwera to upgrade the Area 5 road to Mapanga-Zomba road turn off via area 10 to a tarmac road as is the case with other roads which are currently under construction in Blantyre and some parts of the country.
“The President should also consider building a Shopping Mall, Bus Station and a Five Star Hotel where there is Gaddafi Hospital. This will give a breathing space to Chichiri Shopping Mall,” said Chimwala.
He added: “In all this project government will lose nothing as it can engage a contractor on a build and operate basis where by an investor can build the Shopping Mall, Five Star Hotel and the Bus Station and operate it at an agreed period and hand over it to government.”
“Once this is done, the people of South Lunzu constituency will not forget Chakwera in their lives.”
Chimwala also pleaded with President Chakwera to renovate the torched South Lunzu Magistrate Court.
The Court was burnt by locals in Machinjiri township in 2016 after suspecting that police had brought to court people arrested in connection to the murder of a man who had part of his body skinned.
