The United States Embassy has condemned the arrest of Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma who was later released on police bail after being charged.
In a statement seen by this publication, the US Embassy described the actions taken by the police in arresting Chizuma as highly irregular.
“The US Embassy condemns the arrest of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma. It has been widely reported that she was arrested in the middle of the night pulled from her home in an undignified manner. She was then taken to a police station 48 kilometers outside the capital escorted by a large group of heavily armed personnel. These actions are highly irregular,” read part of the statement.
The Embassy however, was quick to hail government for taking action immediately after the development which includes withdrawing Chizuma’s charges, suspending the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and instituting a commission of inquiry to investigate the matter.
The statement then acknowledges Chizuma’s efforts in her fight against Corruption after being crowned as the Anticorruption champion last year.
Just after her release from police custody, US ambassador to Malawi David Young cheered up Chizuma at the Embassy’s office in the capital Lilongwe.
Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo said having dropped all charges against Chizuma, she will be continue her work like before.
Chizuma has not yet made an official statement surrounding her uncertainties.
