A game ranger at Liwonde National Park is receiving treatment St Luke’s Hospital in Zomba after he was attacked by suspected poachers within the park in the wee hours today.
The game ranger, who was in the company of other rangers, was chasing poachers who had killed a warthog and a bush pig when he was stabbed with a spear below the chest and left arm.
Liwonde National Park’s head of law enforcement Mike Polera has since lamented the rise in attacks on game rangers, after the parks department registered two deaths of rangers this year.
Liwonde National Park’s Field Operations Manager Lawrence Munro said they are currently losing at least four wild animals in a month at the park.
