The Malawi Police Services (MPS) has expressed worry over increase of road accidents involving pedestrians in the country.

The police said this in a statement seen by this publication.

According to the statement, almost 19 pedestrians have been killed by motorist by the month of December.

“From 1-19 December, 2022, a total of 19 pedestrians have been hit and killed by motorists some of which didn’t even stop to attend to the victims,” reads the statement.

According to MPS, a lot of motorist do not reduce speed when passing places like schools, Trading Centers and Market places leading to road accidents.

“This comes after observing that more pedestrians continue to be hit and killed by motorists especially at night. MPS has observed that most of the road accidents happen due to speeding by motorists when passing such places like trading centers,” MPS said.

Malawi police has therefore advised motorists to drive safe and observe speed limits at the same time asking pedestrians to put on reflective clothes at night.

“MPS reminds pedestrians, pedal-cyclists and motorcyclists to always put on reflective clothes during night for them to be visible to motorists and other road users.

The public has also been urged to always help victims and report to police whenever they are involved in road accidents.
